Bottled Water: The New Eco-Disaster
Plastic water bottles are becoming a major environmental hazard. Global consumption of bottled water rose 57% between 1999 and 2004, totaling 154 billion liters. Plastic water bottle packaging worldwide requires 2.7 million tons of plastic per year. Plastic is a petroleum product. In the U.S., the manufacture of plastic water bottles  consumes up to 1.5 million barrels of crude oil annually.
